Sean,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Welcome to LSU!Ā I see you are from Bulldog Country, Georgia that is, but you're kinda close to Tennessee, so not sure what you put in your brackets.Ā Anyway, My Dad went to The University of Georgia (among other schools), so I had to add the Bulldog comment.Ā Dog food, anyone?
Ā Ā Ā Ā It also looks like surveying runs in the family.Ā My Dad was a teacher, professor, basically an educator.Ā He told me before I graduated High School that if I were to pursue a career in education (which is really what I was leaning toward at the thime, that he would not give me a penny to do it.
Ā Ā Ā Ā I do not resent that one bit now because I am a licensed professional land surveyor.Ā What would a land surveyor say to his kids if not for the "help on the farm" type family business things?
Ā Ā Ā Ā I have been told by some who I once considered my mentors that they would never wish land surveying on any of their children.Ā I have also been mentored by some of the best in the professon.Ā A good mentor must love what they do before taking it upon themselves to make an impression on a young professional that this is not just a job - it is a career.
Twenty years ago IĀ pondered these things.Ā I hear in the back of my mind, sometimes, the voice on one of my true mentors, "you are going to be a good one".Ā I knew what that meant.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā If my Dad were a land surveyor, It may have been different.Ā I have told a few young professionalsĀ that 80% of what I know about land surveying I learned after college.Ā At some point I said to one of them to "look around you and think about what we are doing, here".Ā With little explanation my next comment was "this is the greatest profession in the world".Ā It was in those moments that I was now a mentor.
